Mat Fowler is entering his 4th season as the head coach of the Boys/Girls J-Hawk Bowling Program.   Mat spent ten season as an assistant coach under Coach Virg Cerveny.  Mat received Coach of the Year honors in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2021 with the J-Hawk program.   Mat has coached both boys & girls state teams to third place & and runner-up finishes in 2014, 2015, 2019 & 2021.  He has also coached fourteen J-Hawk bowlers to state individual medalists achievements, including a four year streak of an Individual State Champion with the Jefferson squads.

 

Mat has been bowling for 30 years carrying over a 200 average for 23 of them.  He is a Team USA Silver Level Coach, an experienced ball driller and manager for PBC, a former ambassador for Columbia 300, and a former member of the Cedar Rapids Bowling Association.  He is also a certified youth coach.  Mat was inducted into the Cedar Rapids Bowling Hall of Fame in 2018 in recognition of his individual bowling achievements, his work in the bowling community, and his coaching and mentoring of bowling athletes.

Assistant Coach - John Staub

This is year three Coach John Staub has been with the Jefferson Program.  John has been a certified youth coach since 1975. He started out as the LaSalle High School head coach in 1980 and coached there for 15 years. John took five teams to the state tournament and several individuals. John was the boys coach at Prairie from 2013 to 2019 where he sent several  individuals and teams to state. John helped Don Willfong establish the Prairie Baker Tournament.  John has been in the bowling business since 1972 with Lancer Lanes here in Cedar Rapids until he retired.   John's accolades include high Series of 825, sixteen – 300, seventeen -299 games and six 800s. He was inducted in the Cedar Rapids Bowling Hall of Fame in 2005 and was a member of the PBA for 15 years.  We are happy to have John on our staff.

Assistant Coach - John Fulton

This is Coach John Fulton's second year as an assistant with the Jefferson Bowling Program.  John is a 1992 Jefferson High School graduate.  He is married to his wife Kelly, and they have two grown sons Jacob and Justin.  John has coached bowling the last seven years at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School where his sons attended.  Now that they have graduated, he wanted to make the move and coach at his alma mater.  While at Jefferson, he played football, baseball and basketball.  John is also in the Jefferson Baseball Hall of Fame.  John is very excited to help coach our athletes this season!
